this book was intended as a Portuguese-English conversational guide or phrase book, but is regarded as a classic source of unintentional humour, as the given English translations are generally completely incoherent. The humour appears to be a result of dictionary-aided literal translation, which causes many idiomatic expressions to be translated wildly inappropriately. Mark Twain said of English as She Is Spoke that "Nobody can add to the absurdity of this book, nobody can imitate it successfully, nobody can hope to produce its fellow; it is perfect.

English as She Is Spoke Jose de Fonseca Pedro Carolino 9781635961195 Books

To be clear, the book itself is delightful. My review is for this paperback edition - it is little more than a pamphlet-style printout of the freely available Project Gutenberg ebook. There is no accreditation for the intro - is it the one written by Mark Twain? No way of knowing, but I suspect not. There are no Portuguese phrases to go with their comically poor English translations. The English phrases themselves are listed with no line breaks, so that each section of the book is reduced to a single, unbroken paragraph.

All of this makes the text feel sterile, and saps the book of its original charm. The opening page states clearly that this ebook is free for everyone with no restrictions, so if you truly don't care about formatting, save yourself a few bucks and just download and print the ebook version yourself.

Amusing and entertaining. Some phrases will become family slogans.
Fun to read and share with others.
Like a Seinfeld or I Love Lucy sitcom episode, the idea that you could write a book about the English language without being able to speak it - side splitting. I heard about this book on NPR and sought it for years. The hard cover was back ordered for a very long time so when the soft cover came my way, I grabbed it and went to the bath..err library. Funny stuff. Ironic, laughable, really silly and unique.

If you collect unusual literature, love humor or just need a laugh - give this book a read.
A fantastic piece of well-intended insanity that can be read over and over again. Some people without a sense of humor may just find it to be too absurd but if you keep in mind the fact that this was a real reference guide decades ago, it is impossible not to laugh.
This has got to be one of the funniest things I have ever TRIED to read. Half the time I was struggling to figure out what on earth was meant by the phrases; the other half I was choking with laughter.
If you like languages, words, or just hilariously misguided (but genuine) how-to books, English As She Is Spoke is for you. I got my first copy in college, and would keep my roommate up as I giggled in the lower bunk at the ridiculous sample sentences and structures the book presents as gospel truth. A most have if even the smallest part of you is philologically inclined. Also, it makes a wonderful gift for English faculty.
Bought this because I speak both languages, but this edition has only English. What's the point?! Wish I could get my money back for this purchase.
